First Time Homebuyer Series – The Very Basics: What is Flashing?

Flashing is an impenetrable material, usually made of galvanized steel, but also could be made from other materials such as, lead, copper or aluminum. It prevents the flow of water into certain areas such as chimneys, vent pipes, walls, windows and skylights, for example. Otherwise, if water were to penetrate crevices at these areas, mold could build up causing rot and other destruction. There are many types of flashing.
