Are Your Walkways Accessible for Seniors?
One of the most frustrating challenges for seniors is entering homes or buildings that are not accessible. Some seniors may be using a walker or wheelchair. Others may just be walking slowly and need a very safe and clear walkway.
Do the walkways around your home or that of your relative or friend who is a senior meet the the following requirements?
- Outfitted with a ramp with a minimum 5 foot landing for easy access to home's main entrance? Clear of cracks or uneven surfaces where someone could trip?
- Firm, stable and as close to level as possible?
- At least 36 inches wide?
- Made of material that will not be slippery when wet, icy or covered with algae or fungi (or modified with anti-slip materials?)
- Outfitted with railings (at least 1.5 inches in diameter) for those who do walk and need a steady grip every step of the way?
- At least partially covered to protect them when the weather is inclement?
- Well-lit by sensors for all times of day and weather?
